______________________________________________________________________________

Spell It! is a spelling scheme in four stages.  It is designed for teachers

to use in the classroom with small groups or in one-on-one situations.

______________________________________________________________________________

The scheme is multi-sensory: it teaches by using all the pupil’s sensory channels – the visual, the auditory, the tactile and the kinaesthetic (i.e. the muscular effort of the body).  It is structured and cumulative, in that each section of learning leads to the next and each section builds on what has been taught previously.  However, it is also possible for most of the sections to be used independently.

The scheme includes the 300 key words which constitute 50 – 75% of those used in English (see McNally and Murray 1984).  Beyond these, words have been selected according to the frequency of their use from the Thorndike Illustrated Junior Dictionary.

How to use the pupils’ pages

The title of each section incorporates the spelling pattern to be taught, for instance: -

‘Don’t duck ‘ck’

Followed by a picture.  The teacher should discuss the picture briefly with the pupil.

What is happening in the picture?

Is there more than one meaning, then, for the word ‘duck’?  Can you think of others?

Multi-sensory – simultaneous inclusive application for all sensory channels

1.           Look – say the whole word clearly – listen to the sound / syllables

2.           Look – listen as you name the letters in the word (if the target word is already written in large letters use a finger to trace/ touch and feel the shape of letters / words)

3.           Cover the word

4.           Say the word and write it in joined up writing

5.           Check the word

If the pupil is experiencing difficulty with letter string spelling test – Spell It! Books 1 to 4 is recommended as appropriate teaching materials.
