General Principles for the Development of Spelling Accuracy

It has become widely accepted that the use of joined script reduces the frequency of spelling errors and the frequency with which some letters are reserved, most notably ‘b’ and ‘d’.  It helps therefore, for pupils to develop a joined script as early as possible.  Pupils should always be encouraged to use joined script when completing spelling exercises.  The school spelling policy should always have links with the spelling policy.

If a target word is a member of a group of words with the same letter pattern teach all the words in the group.

If a word can have prefixes and suffixes added, teach these variations.

Create a distance between the creative part of the writing activity (i.e. the first draft) and the secretarial part (i.e. proofreading).  The pupil’s fluency and creativity will suffer if attention is directed to spelling, punctuation and general presentation while creating ideas using a broad vocabulary.

Where a pupil has a weak memory try using the following method:

1. Look at the incorrect spelling compare it to the correct spelling ~ focus on the part of the word causing difficulty.

2. Write the correct spelling.

3. Try to remember the spelling.

4. Cover the word.

5. Write the word.

6. Check the word and say it.

7. Look for words with the same pattern causing difficulties and write them.

8. Repeat 2 – 6 with these words.
