The Kickstart Assessment File is the process used to assess a pupils strengths and needs and identify exactly where they need to start.  However, success isn’t only measured in grades or test scores.  It is the smile on a pupil’s face when they can read aloud with confidence.

The Second Phonic Blending Book is designed to follow the First Phonic Blending Book.  The worksheets are designed to help the teacher progress through the steps of c-c-v-c[1] blending, c-v-c-c[2] blending and finally c-c-v-c-c[3] blending.

At each stage the pupil needs to be encouraged to combine the blends into a single utterance rather than sound each letter sound individually, i.e. it is important the pupil says: -

cl-i-p rather than c-l-i-p

Similarly, it is important that pupils master the technique of combining the initial consonant and the medial vowel single utterance, i.e. it is important that the pupil says: -

si-n-k rather than s-i-n-k

It is quite common for pupils starting to develop blending skills at this level to transpose letters.  Good examples are the tendency to say glup for gulp and skin for sink.  These difficulties indicate that the pupil needs more practice in combining two letter sounds.

If the pupil is experiencing difficulty with Phonic Test 4 ~ Final Consonant Blends, the Second Phonic Blending Book is recommended as appropriate teaching materials.
