If a pupil is struggling with spoken English, Kickstart resources build a foundation in basic English to make reading and writing easier and more enjoyable.

Consonant digraphs can be taught successfully as soon as a pupil has mastered all letters sounds and the skill of c-v-c[1] blending.  As a consonant digraph represents a single sound, it is easier to accommodate these than the skill of c-c-v-c[2] blending.

Confusion between ‘f’ and ‘th’

It is quite common for pupils to confuse the sounds ‘f’ and ‘th’.  Where this occurs emphasise the position of the tip of the tongue when making the ‘th’ sound.  Where pupils experience difficulties in discriminating between the voice and unvoiced sounds of ‘th’ ask them to say a word using each sound while pressing the hand on the throat, they will feel vibrations when saying words using the voiced sound, e.g. ‘then’.

If the pupil is experiencing difficulty with Phonic Test 5 ~ Consonant Digraphs, the Consonant Digraph Book is recommended as appropriate teaching materials.
